TechSoup is a division of Microsoft that works with 501(c) non-profits to allow them access to software at very affordable prices. TechSoup features almost all Microsoft products and also includes products from Adobe and many other large software vendors. On top of Windows 7 licenses for under $15, TechSoup uses volume licensing which eliminates the clutter and worry about software stored on on CD's and DVD's. TechSoup has very strict policies on when and how you are allowed to use their software. Here at Community Choice we can help you read through and understand all the licensing agreements.
SpiceWorks is a free network monitoring tool. It runs on a computer inside or outside of your network and keeps track of everything related to IT. The program can be setup to send an email when a printer is low on ink, a backup battery is running low, or a piece of software is installed on a computer. It can also be used to inventory all of your computers and computer equipment. It works seemlessly with programs that allow a user to log into another computer or just monitor another computer. You could be on vacation hundreds of miles away and a coworker could call asking you to help them fine a document. If you have a SpiceWorks, a laptop, and an Internet connection, we can set you up to log into your coworkers computer from thousands of miles away and help them out.
Synology Diskstations are little computers as small as a lunchbox. They are not free, but they are a great value. A computer server is typically a big, complicated box that only a computer technician can work on. Synology is trying to break this trend by creating an alternative to the big expensive servers. These little boxes have the ability to back up every computer in your organazation and they are designed to seemlessly connect to Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3). Amazon S3 is a very low cost web service that allows off site data storage. This means that if every computer in your organization was stolen or if your building burned down, every single byte of your data is securely stored in a large server farm. This equipment and service is only recommended for larger organizations.
